Clik here to view.I love the outdoors—but, growing up, I wouldn’t have called myself “outdoorsy.” My parents have a pool in their backyard which we used (and still do!) daily, but my family rarely went to the nearby beach or park. As a child, I shied away from physical activities—hiking, biking, horseback riding, and sports. To this day, I’ve never gone camping!
As an adult, I’ve really tried to embrace nature. I want to try everything—and if I hate it, well, at least I gave it my best. To this account, my husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at a luxury dude ranch, learning to ride horses and corral cattle. (For the record, I loved it.) I’ve hiked Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, and gone kayaking at midnight in Mexico. Stand-up paddle boarding might be one of my all-time favorite activities. And the beach—well, we’re regulars now. It feels great to be connected with the outdoors, and I want my children to grow up with a sense of adventure.
Nevertheless, there’s still one thing I don’t like about the great outdoors… Bugs. Little, big, harmless, or blood-sucking—you name it, I hate it. I hate them. And so does my young son—who seems to attract mosquitoes like honey to a bee. But as a conscious mom, who studiously reads labels and researches ingredients, I’ve always been reluctant to ward off critters with bug spray (the chemicals! the smell! the icky texture!)
That’s because, until recently, the primary insect repellent available to protect families has been the synthetic chemical DEET. In fact, 80% of insect repellents on the market are DEET-based. Fortunately, effective alternatives that rely on plant-based ingredients are now emerging.
